nabij Acebuchal, Andalucía (España)

This is an excellent walk starting at Acebuchal and terminating at the summit of Cerro de los Machos at 1589m. Most of the route follows well marked paths but the last section after the Collado Cacharro has no path. The target peak (east summit) will be obvious about 90m higher, and the walker should choose the best route suitable to their ability. Vegetation is a little troublesome with some spiny shrubs best avoided. A forest fire many years ago has left trees fallen across the route and one dead tree still standing with several upright branches is a good landmark (see photograph) A short rock scramble is necessary to reach the lesser summit and the ridge is interestingly rocky with superb views.
The summit cairn is reached after another steep scramble but the hard work is amply rewarded with a 360 degree panorama.
Retrace your steps to Acebuchal.
This walk has been categorised as 'very difficult' only because of the scrambles after leaving the track. (Classification is dependent on the walkers experience and careful study of a map should give more guidance.)
parkeren

Car park. Capilla San Antonio.

Car parking is available for about fifteen cars adjacent to the small chapel dedicated to Saint Antony and built by subscription from local benefactors. The chapel can be found just beyond the bar in Acebuchal if entering from the Frigiliana side. If you have approached from Competa then the car park is immediately on the left as you enter the hamlet.

Cruz de Simon.

A simple memorial dedicated to Antonio Simon Fernandez Ortiz, a member of the Guardia Civil and native of Acebuchal. Apparently he had odd coloured eyes, one green and one blue and was declared a hero in the Moroccan War after the siege of the Nador flour factory in 1921.

As you climb out of the Barranco de las Angustias onto the track from the shattered white limestone, turn right and there is a red arrow marking the start of a path which cuts out the twists in the track. As you gain height on this path the track can be seen below, after about 600m the path re-joins the track. Continue uphill.

Leave the track and pick the best line onto the east summit. Some animal paths are present but these don't go to the summit - beware! Use the tree in the photograph as a marker.

Summit of Cerro de los Machos

Enjoy the superb views from this 1589m summit. The peaks visible are too numerous to list: you can enjoy looking down on a substantial part of the route taken to reach your vantage point!

This is an excellent report and you really have started me thinking of this as an option in the near future. Your photographs are fabulous and the description of the route is second to none, one of the best in Wikiloc. Congratulations. murraydublin.

Many thanks for your kind comments Murray. The excellent weather which usually prevails helps to get good images whilst walking in this area of the Axarquia.
I hope that you enjoy this walk when you 'get around to it'

    Muchas gracias.
