A hike to the Meerfeld Maar can be suitably combined with hiking the Wolfsschlucht (wolf's canyon), the Mosenberg, the Windsborn crater and untold other scenic spots in the area.
In fall, you may encounter many other delights, such as free apples and pears along the way, pumpkin self-service-stations and many more.
The hike starts at the Heidsmühle, a Hotel and Restaurant. We also recommend a break at the Gasthaus Weiler in Bettenfeld. Bettenfeld is a sleepy village without much telephone-coverage, but instead offers pork knuckle for lunch (at least during a Sunday in fall).
The walk around the Meerfelder Maar is a breeze. Do not forget to stop at way point 16 to look at the memorial of the 'Urknall' (Big Bang). We are not sure why it is here, but we liked it!
At waypoint 18, keep left (or rather straight) on the footpath, while crossing a tarmac road. Watch out for any traffic coming around the bend.
If you happen to be in the area, visit the castles of Manderscheid - or at least the view point from where they can be seen.
