nabij Mont-Dore, Auvergne (France)
Walk from the spa town of Mont-Dore to the highest peak in the Massif Central, the Puy de Sancy (1885 m). Walk largely via Grande Randonnée tracks. In Mont-Dore the track starts at the parking lot near the tourist office and climbs straight from the Thermes (stairs just to the right) to la Grande Cascade and then on to Roc de Cuzeau. From here, the track follows the ridge to the Puy de Sancy. From there you can descend to the restaurant of the cable car station, and then you continue to Puy de Cliergue and then down to the mountain station of the Funiculaire, and then back down to Mont-Dore via the Chemins des Médécins. The walk offers great views, unless you walk in the clouds as I did at least half of the walk.
I observed some marmots near Puy de Cliergue.
At the mountain station of the Téléphérique there is a restaurant. The photos with this waypoint were taken earlier in the week when I took the téléphérique to the top.
La Grande Cascade, or the great waterfall, is a great spot above Mont-Dore at about 1300 meters.
Puy de Cliergue at 1691 meters. From here the descend to Mont-Dore starts.
The Puy de Sancy is the highest peak in central France at 1885 m. Like most of the peaks here, it constitutes the remains of an extinct volcano. From the cable car station at 1780 meters there is a wooden walkway to the top, which you walk down as part of this trail. There is a panoramic viewpoint with orientation boards. The top was shrouded in clouds on the day of this walk, so I illustrated this waypoint with some photos taken earlier in the week when I took the cable car.
At Roc de Cuzeau at 1737 the continuous climb from Mont-Dore stops and the ridge walk with smaller ascents and descents towards Puy de Sancy and onwards to Puy de Cliergue starts.
