The track follows the Via Appia Antica loosely as it's not possible to hike the original route anymore. In large part because the old road have been upgraded over the centuries and is now a highway in some section or a main provincial road where cars are speeding by you. In other sections, the road is simply gone. Instead, I've searched for nice roads, a little away from any main roads where there is a lot less traffic (or none at all). Where possible, it will pass through the centre of towns to allow some local site-seeing and a chance to resupply.
The track starts at the steps that are the official end of the (extended) Via Appia Antica. At the location there are 2 columns reminding of these days. From the starting point, the first place you pass is the Cattedrale della Visitazione e di San Giovanni Battista after 200 meters. From there, this track turns left. You can take a shortcut here. If you follow the track, you'll see the local theatre with some ancient ruins in the basement.
From this point, you'll follow the "Corso Umberto", the main road of Brindisi. At the end of this road, you are at the train station. Just before the train station, take a right turn until the next intersection. Make a left turn here (around 1.3 km on your odometer). Here you'll be in a street actually called "Via Appia", which I can only assume is the original name and location. However, this road is just 100 meters. At that point, you'll find a small tunnel to cross the track. On the other side of the track, the Via Appia will continue. Follow the road for another 1.5 km. From that point (around 3 km on your odometer), you'll leave the Via Appia for a while. As mentioned, you could just continue on this road, but soon you'll be on a highway.
After another 2 km, you'll leave Brindisi behind and you'll be in the fields. When you've hiked around 16 km, you'll arrive in the outskirts of Mesagne. The trail will bring you through the historic centre. Once you cross through the historic centre, you will pass an old port and then come to a square. From here you'll be back on the Via Appia. The direct track would have been 2 km shorter, but a lot more dangerous, noisy and boring.
At the square, you follow the Via Granafe to get to the Mesagne Train Station. If you want to do these stages one at a time, you can take the train back to Brindisi from here. Or maybe better: Park your car at the train station in Mesagne, take the train to Brindisi and hike back.
As much as possible, the next stages of this long distance hike will start and end at train stations, to make it easier to walk a stage at a time.
I'm not sure yet how many stages this series will have, but I'm trying to put them together, not just on the computer, but actually hiking the stages, finding the nicest tracks. Like this trail, it was no hiked in 1 day, but a complication of several different hikes, picking the best road.
Enjoy the trail end leave a comment. In particular if you know some interesting waypoints should be included or an alternate track that could/should be used. Any information is much appreciated.
